There is a New York based nonprofit organization that gives small grants to assist poor people who have jobs but can't afford to pay unforeseen bills, such as car repairs or the cost of emergency medical care. The group does not give cash to the grant recipients, but pays the bill directly. They have given away $250,000.00 this year to help over 3,200 people, with an average grant of $300.00.
